Silent and Deadly

Icebergs are like the Sirens of Odysseus, drawing inexperienced kayakers in far too close. In photos, the bergs always look so beautifully serene and majestic.  But in reality, their deep fins are being eroded quickly by sea currents, sculpted into grotesque shapes, and they can capsize at any moment. The visible ice, above the water, is just as treacherous. Bright sunshine heats up and expands air bubbles trapped in the white snow-ice causing enormous slabs of ice to fracture and avalanche off without any warning. Often you don’t even hear the ice break off until it hits the water. Then comes the explosion, and your kayak should be well out of the picture if you are to survive.
